Traditional Soto Zen Service 10:30 AM
Dharma Talk: 11:00 AM
Speaker: Guest Speaker Katsuryu Bill Cooper
Katsuryu met his first Buddhist teacher, Matsuoka Roshi, in 1981. Following jukai and discipleship, he was ordained as a Zen priest in 1986. He remained with Long Beach Zen Temple for a couple more years, and he then began training at other Buddhist centers and with other teachers, including the Theravadin tradition.
Along with regular weekly practice at the Temple in the 1980s, Katsuryu had the benefit of living at the Long Beach Temple for several months in 1987.
The dharma talk will try to answer questions such as, Who was the Matsuoka of the 1980s? How did he live, and What can we learn about Zen from his example?
Matsuoka roshi urgently wanted his students to understand the Buddha Dharma. Today’s talk by Katsuryu, and our discussion following, will try to further that understanding.
Katsuryu is the Practice Leader of Bellevue Dharma, an STO Affiliate in Washington. Bellevue Dharma meets online on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month. Newcomers are welcome to join us.
