Speaker: Dr. Steven Haberlin
Dharma Talk Topic: Discussion of his path and work on using Tonglen As Practice/Teaching with Educators in Promotion of Inclusion and Compassion
Bio: Dr. Steve Haberlin is an assistant professor of education at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia. After working as a k-12 educator, mainly a teacher of elementary gifted education, Steve earned his Ph.D. in elementary education from the University of South Florida. His teaching, research, and service are focused on the integration of contemplative practices, including mindfulness and meditation, with the preparation of teachers. His campus work includes establishing a Meditation Space for students and faculty, facilitating meditation workshops, and hosting a Contemplative campus-wide convocation. Steve's research and writings have appeared in a number of academic journals, including the Journal of Educational Supervision, College Teaching, and Action in Teacher Education. He is currently co-writing a book chapter on the use of tonglen to promote inclusive and compassionate instructional supervision of teachers and contracted with Rowman and Littlefield to publish a book on a mindfulness-based approach to coaching and preparing teachers. Steve is a Georgia Governor's Teaching Fellow and recently earned the Vulcan Teaching Excellence Award for teaching skills, leadership, and work with students. A meditator for 25 years, Steve continues to study and refine his own contemplative practice, including recently graduating from a two-year Contemplative Studies -Tibetan Buddhism program facilitated by Dr. Miles Neale.
